The number one reason that people join MMORPGs is to interact with other players. Battling, trading, and communicating with other people makes online games so much more real than "offline" games. I've played a variety of MMORPGs and I'm surprised by the lack of quality guilds. Most games have 4 or 5 guilds that control the game, while there are hundreds of poorly managed guilds that accomplish nothing. Creating and managing a guild is much easier than you think, if you just remember these guidelines.
1. Create a guild leadership system. If nobody knows whose in charge, nothing will ever be accomplished. Create a system where players can be promoted if they show dedication/potential
2. Set recruiting standards. Only let the best into your guild. This very important. Make sure the people you recruit are active and will contribute positively to the guild. Advertise for you guild on forums and in game.
3. Run guild events often. Spend time with you guild members and get to know them. Running a guild is fun! Enjoy it.
4. Punishment. If you don't punish guild members when they deliberately do something wrong, you gild will fall apart. Talk the member first. Be nice, try not to be accusing. If the problem continues, they need to go.
5. Create a guild website. If you have the means to do this, do it. Your guild members will respect your dedication, and the website can be a great tool in the organization of your guild.
Remember, any player can power-level their characters or become mindless gold farmers. But only the greatest and most respected MMORPG players can establish a guild and command an army of players. Good luck!
